Are you planning to register your Alaska DBA to establish business branding in the state? If yes, you have come to the right place. We have shared a guide below on how to file a DBA in Alaska or you can use a trusted DBA service.
Register an Alaska DBA
Registering a business name in Alaska is quite easy. You just have to follow the steps given below.
#1 Begin with an Alaska DBA Business Name Search
Choose a business name that is unique and meets all the business name requirements in Alaska.
First of all visit the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development’s website and check for your chosen DBA name to ensure it is not already in use. Then, you must review Alaska business naming requirements. It should not include the following:
- Any objectionable word or phrase that implies the corporation is used for other purposes rather than the one mentioned in the Articles of Incorporation.
- Words like “city”, “borough”, or “village” imply that the corporation is a municipality. The name of the city, borough, or village can be used in the corporate name.
- Any word or phrase that confuses your business with a government agency or entity (Treasury, FBI, State Department, etc.).
- Any word with a professional licensing restriction like an “engineer” must have a professional license.
We suggest you check if your business name is available as a web domain (URL). Even though you are not planning to start your business today, you can secure the URL beforehand.
If you haven’t thought of a DBA name, you can use a business name generator to get one. You can also create a logo for your brand using a free logo generator before you jump onto the next step.
#2 Register Your Alaska DBA
You must acquire an Alaska business license before you register your Alaska Business name. An entrepreneur must have a separate business license for each name the business uses. If you don’t have a business license, you must register to fill out the New Business License Application or by filing online.
You can file your Alaska business name online or by mailing the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development. The online filing is done through the Department of Commerce website or by completing the New Business Name Registration form.
The form includes the following important sections:
- Section 3: It includes the business name, License Number of your business in Alaska, and business structure type (Corporation, LLC, Partnership, etc.)
- Section 7: Explain the nature of your business.

After Filing The Alaska DBA
You should take note of a few more steps before starting your business journey.
- Create a Business Website:
All businesses, no matter how big or small, need a website. Website builders like GoDaddy and Wix have made the job much easier.
- Keep Business Finances in Place:
It is always wise to keep your personal and business finances separate. You can begin by opening a separate business bank account and getting a credit card for your business.
- Safeguard your Business:
Just like an LLC protects your personal assets against a lawsuit, similarly your business assets need protection. Business insurance ensures you are under protection if anything bad happens. You can begin with general liability insurance.
